RT830D – a fast 1D and 2D code scanner in the Unisystem offering

Barcodes and 2D codes are now a standard in many areas such as retail, transport, logistics, and access control systems. In response to these needs, Unisystem offers peripheral devices, including 1D and 2D code scanners. One of them is the RT830D by RTscan – a compact embedded scanner designed for reliable, intensive operation in automated systems.

The RT830D is a small yet powerful scanner that enables fast reading of 1D and 2D codes, including QR, Aztec, MaxiCode, and Data Matrix. The device is designed as a permanently mountable module, allowing it to be seamlessly integrated into various end devices. Its construction enables installation behind protective glass, increasing resistance to dust, dirt, and moisture. As a result, the RT830D can also be used in outdoor applications exposed to more demanding environmental conditions.

Thanks to its compact dimensions (approx. 61 × 64 × 33 mm), the scanner can be easily integrated even into small enclosures. It supports both vertical and horizontal orientations, giving designers significant flexibility when developing devices. A large scanning window improves user comfort, as it does not require precise code positioning and allows fast reading simply by bringing the code close to the glass surface.

The RT830D is widely used in public transport systems. It is commonly deployed in ticket readers and validators installed in buses, trams, and metro systems. Passengers can present either a smartphone displaying an electronic ticket or a paper ticket with a printed code, and the scanner reads the data almost instantly.

Other example applications of the RT830D in public transport include:

  • entry systems,
  • self-service kiosks, such as ticket machines and parking meters,
  • storage systems, including deposit lockers.

Speed and ease of use

The RT830D was designed for fast and seamless code reading in systems with a high number of users. A 640 × 480 px image sensor, combined with LED illumination at a color temperature of 4000 K, allows data to be processed in a fraction of a second, ensuring smooth and efficient operation.

A wide field of view – approximately 60° horizontally and 46° vertically – enables codes to be read at various angles without precise alignment with the scanning window. The large reading area simplifies use and shortens interaction time. The scanner is also highly resistant to changing lighting conditions, maintaining excellent performance both in strong ambient light and in low-light environments.

The RT830D can operate in automatic mode, where it detects the presence of a code and initiates scanning without the need for a physical button. This improves both user convenience and hygiene, especially in self-service devices. Depending on system requirements, scanning can also be triggered via a command from the host system.

The device supports a full range of popular 1D symbologies (including UPC, EAN, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, and Codabar) as well as 2D codes (such as QR Code, Data Matrix, PDF417, Micro QR, Aztec, and MaxiCode). It can also read very small codes – with a minimum line width of approximately 0.1 mm – increasing its versatility across applications.

Design and system integration

The RT830D was designed for easy integration with a wide range of devices. It supports three popular communication interfaces: USB, RS232, and TTL232. This makes it suitable for connection to computers, operator panels, and embedded systems based on microcontrollers.

Scanner configuration is simple and does not require additional software. Operating parameters – such as scanning mode or sound settings – can be adjusted by scanning dedicated configuration codes from the manufacturer’s manual.

To simplify integration, RTscan offers additional accessories, including connection cables, connectors, mounting elements, and a USB/RS232 test board. 3D models and integration guides are also available, helping to speed up device design and production deployment.

Applications of the RT830D scanner

The RT830D by RTscan is a versatile scanner; however, its design and integration method make it particularly well suited for use in automated and self-service systems.

A key feature of the device is the ability to mount it behind protective glass, which increases resistance to mechanical damage, contamination, and environmental factors while ensuring safe use in public spaces. As a result, the RT830D performs exceptionally well in publicly accessible devices exposed to intensive use and frequent user interaction.

Below are example application areas of the device.

Passenger service systems

The RT830D is used in ticket readers, validators, and metro gates. Fast code reading and automatic operation ensure smooth passenger flow, even during peak hours. The device supports both paper tickets and codes displayed on smartphone screens.

Access control systems

In access control systems, the scanner can be deployed in turnstiles and entry points for office buildings, sports facilities, and cultural institutions. The wide scanning area and lack of precise alignment requirements enable quick and efficient user passage.

Self-service devices

The RT830D is well suited for self-service devices such as information kiosks, vending machines, and deposit lockers. The automatic code detection mode simplifies operation and eliminates the need for physical buttons. Compact dimensions allow easy integration even into small enclosures.

Logistics and warehouse applications

The scanner can be used at parcel pickup points, automated parcel lockers, and sorting stations. Support for multiple code symbologies and the ability to read small labels increase flexibility in logistics environments. Integration with embedded systems allows easy adaptation to existing infrastructure.

Queue management and registration systems

The RT830D is also used in queue management and registration systems, including government offices, medical facilities, and other public institutions. Its features support contactless, intuitive operation.

Industrial systems

In industrial environments, the RT830D can be integrated into production lines, quality control stations, and component identification points. Support for RS232 and TTL232 interfaces enables straightforward communication with control systems and industrial automation. The scanner supports identification processes that require stable and repeatable operation.
