Interfaces make it possible to transfer images from devices providing data such as industrial computers to devices presenting data, e.g., displays. Without an interface, the two devices could not work together. In today’s post, we will compare LVDS and RGB interfaces. What are their biggest advantages? What types of interfaces can be found in Unisystem’s offer? In which industries are they used?

What is an industrial computer?

What is CNC? The CNC acronym stands for computer numerical control. A programmed microcomputer automates the CNC machines.

Displays in CNC machines give operators precise control. They facilitate continuous monitoring of the machining process. The display in CNC machine shows safety warnings and alerts, reducing the risk of costly errors and breakdowns. It also provides an intuitive interface.

Types of displays used in CNC machines

The type of display installed in CNC machines depends on the working environment and the users’ needs. A distinction is made between:

  • OLED displays – not common due to their high price, but offer excellent picture quality and wide viewing angles.
  • LCDs – they are most common in today’s CNC machines. They can be monochrome (in more basic applications) or colour (better display of graphics and 3D models). They are also value for money.
  • Touch screens – allow direct interaction with the machine interface by touching the screen. They are either resistive or capacitive
  • LED displays – offer high contrast and brightness. They are durable and consume less power than traditional LCDs.
  • CRT displays – can still be found in older models.

Touch technology in CNC machines

Modern CNC HMIs combine a display with a touch screen, creating a convenient control panel. They allow users to adjust parameters and programs by simply touching the screen, making operation without physical buttons easier.

Resistive touch screens operate by pressure applied to the screen. They are common in industrial environments because they are resistant to, e.g., dust or temperature differences; they can also be operated with gloves. They allow only one point of contact.

Capacitive touch screens allow multi-touch gestures. They detect the conductivity of the human finger and do not require pressure. They respond to light touch and offer a smooth functioning.

HMI interfaces on CNC machines enable interaction between human operators and machines. They optimize industrial processes digitally, centralize data, and allow for detailed operation monitoring. Incorporating touch technology in CNC machines reduces set-up time and improves operational efficiency. What is more, the touch solutions can be combined with tempered glass to protect the screen from scratches and damage.

How do displays affect the accuracy and efficiency of CNC machines?

Modern displays on CNC machines visualize cutting speed, depth of cut, tool coordinates, and other critical parameters in real-time. Parts are produced with greater accuracy.

Operators can track performance graphs and machine diagnostics on the screen. It helps identify and solve problems. Downtime is minimized.

The touch solutions make it easy to program and edit code directly on the CNC machine. Operators can view, modify, and optimize programs without the need for external equipment. In addition, the devices are integrated into the Industry 4.0 ecosystem. That includes connectivity with ERP systems, MES, CAD/CAM software, and IoT platforms.

The CNC machine display provides an intuitive graphical interface. It includes menus, buttons, and visual elements that make it easy for the operator to interact with the machine. Advanced systems incorporate 3D visualization. This allows operators to view three-dimensional models of the parts to be machined.

The screen can be used to visualize the simulation of the machining process before executing it on the actual machine. Operators can see the paths and detect potential problems. Quick adjustments can be made directly on the CNC machine by touching the screen.
