OLED technology – the principle of operation
OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) is an image display technology based on light-emitting diodes made of organic chemical compounds. Each pixel in an OLED screen emits its own light, so no additional backlighting is required. The operation of OLED displays is based on electroluminescence. Under the influence of an electric voltage, the organic layers emit light of a certain color.
Advantages and disadvantages of OLED displays
The main advantage of OLED displays is their excellent image quality. Due to the fact that each pixel glows independently, more vivid colors and deeper blacks are achieved, which translates into better image quality. In addition, OLED displays feature wide angles, so the content presented can be viewed from any plane. They are also distinguished by fast response time, which makes them ideal for dynamically changing images.
Despite its many advantages, OLED technology also has some drawbacks. One of the main limitations is the durability of organic materials – over time, they can degrade, leading to pixel burn-in. Still perceived as a disadvantage is the cost of production, which is higher compared to, for example, classic LCD panels, which can be important for applications requiring economic optimization.
OLED displays by Winstar
Unisystem offers a wide range of OLED displays from Winstar, which differ in terms of selected parameters, allowing the user to choose the optimal variant for specific requirements. The models in question are graphic OLED displays of small size: 1.3- (WEO064128B, WEA064128B, WEO012840A, WEA012840A), 1.54- (WEO016080A, WEA016080A) or 2.0-inch (WEO012832K, WEA012832K). These are COG (Chip-on-Glass) solutions, with some models integrated into the PCB. They are ideal for applications designed to operate in extreme conditions, including extremely high and low temperatures – their operating temperature range is defined as -40 to 80°C.

Applications of OLED displays from Winstar
Described OLED graphic displays by Winstar are used in a wide range of consumer and industrial applications.
Thanks to COG technology, in which the control chip is placed directly on the glass of the display, these modules feature a slim design, making them ideal for installation in devices with limited space.
At the same time, as a technology that does not require a backlight and is, therefore, energy-efficient, OLED displays are often used in battery-powered solutions, including mobile devices.
OLED displays are implemented in, among other things:
- gaming devices,
- devices used in IoT systems, including smart home or smart office,
- wearable devices – such as smartwatches,
- portable measuring instruments,
- media players.
