E-paper modules respond to market demand

Due to the growing market interest in e-paper displays and the cumbersome installation of these displays in large sizes, Unisystem has developed mechanical modules, the so-called “e-paper modules”. open frame, which allow for easy integration of E-Paper Display (EPD) panels into end-use applications.

Why is it a hassle to assemble the EPD by yourself?

Primarily because of the dimensions of the e-paper displays. The thickness of the 13-inch ED133UT2 display is only 0.78mm, and for the 31-inch ED312TT2 display the thickness is 0.805mm. Given that the aforementioned panels have a glass substrate, there is a high risk of damage during improper installation.

In addition, the previously mentioned displays do not have built-in controllers, which come as an additional component and are available in several different variants.

What do the EPD Open Frame modules provide?

First – security.

For the mechanical reasons described above, “bare” large-size e-paper displays are extremely fragile and susceptible to damage. Therefore, a properly designed enclosure is a critical element to ensure the safety of the EPD display.

It also has the unquestionable advantage of an elegant front glass with a delicate painting and a UV filter laminate to protect the e-paper material from degradation and discoloration. Due to its thickness of ~4.5mm, the module also provides excellent protection for the display from mechanical damage.

To take care of the optimization of the production process, Unisystem has developed a machine for positioning and securely assembling e-paper displays in a dedicated housing. This increases safety, speeds up installation and reduces losses to zero.

Second – the convenience of installation.

Appropriately designed in consultation with E Ink, the modules come in several variants: tablet, with a mounting frame, each in indoor or outdoor versions. Such a solution allows for greater flexibility and ease in customizing the e-paper for your application.

Third – dedicated controllers.

You can choose controllers that allow communication via: SPI, USB, Wi-Fi and GSM. In the case of the first two protocols – USB and SPI – the appropriate connectors are brought out of the device’s case, and in the case of outdoor version modules, the appropriate cables with waterproof DSUB connectors are also included.

Controllers with Wi-Fi or GSM modules require the creation of a local host to communicate with them and send relevant data and commands. On the mechanical side, a PCB antenna is added to ensure proper characterization. A web-based CMS application for content management is also available for system designers.

E-paper technology differs enough from LCD-TFT that in terms of the steps required to obtain a usable component, an e-paper display can be compared to the matrix itself rather than a complete LCD-TFT display. In both cases, a number of factors need to be taken care of in order to get a complete, working module.

The Unisystem EPD Module is the answer to this type of demand. It is a ready-made component that can be much more simply, conveniently and safely implemented in the final application. So the system integrator does not have to struggle with securing and controlling the e-paper display, as the module provides:

  • Adequate mechanical protection of the e-paper
  • Laminated front glass including UV filter
  • Integrated and programmed controllers
  • Several variants to choose from depending on your requirements:
    • indoor / outdoor
    • mounting frame / tablet
    • wired/wireless control
  • Easy installation
  • Elegant design

The Unisystem EPD Module is a practical solution to all the problems that can hinder the integration of EPD panels in end applications.
